Long ago Thomas Malthus offered one of the most influential analyses of population growth. In the years since, his framework on understanding the nature of global population growth has been challenged. What do you think? Explain why you generally agree or generally disagree with Malthus’ view.
One of the most important things about population growth is that it affects the poor section of the society more than the rich because of the fact that they would be able to afford. In the event of less food production and more population, it would lead to famine, poverty and inequality. This would mean that Malthusian theory is right about increasing the food supply in line with the increase in population growth in order to meet the growing requirement. Secondly, it would also mean that people should engage in positive and healthy population control through virtuous means as Malthouse suggests from the religious point of view. Today, there are many people suffer in poverty, famine and unfavourable conditions in different parts of the world that could only be solved through increased food production and other better policies that would distribute food to people in poverty and famine.
