Enteral nutrition is method to feed supplements via tube directly into stomach or small bowel. This mode of providing nutrition is used in the patients who have difficulty in swallowing (dysphagia) due to motor disorder, sclerosis. Patients complaining of tumour in oesophagus, cancer, head injury or stroke may also require enteral nutrition. This method of nutrition intake is advisable only in a case where the gastro-intestinal tract is accessible and functional.

Step by step process of administering enteral nutrition formulas with enteral pumps is given below:

a) The patient needs to be seated of laid in the bed at 30-45 degrees.

b) The essentials like- amount of formula, pump feeding bag, Cup, cloth towel, 60 mL catheter, Button adapter to be made ready at one place.

c) The roller clamp in the feeding bag to be closed and then pour the required amount of formula in the feeding bag.

d) In case a portable pump is used, so that the feed can be given anytime, insert the bag in the pump, in other type of pump, hang the feeding bag on the IV pole.

e) The tubing needs to be primed by pouring formula in a cup.

f) The plug of the feeding tube to be opened and in case of a button, the adapter needs to be inserted in it.

g) The recommended amount of water to be drawn into the catheter tip syringe.

h) The feeding tube needs to be unclamped and tube to be flushed.

i) Feeding tube to be reclamped and syringe to be disconnected.

j) The end of the feeding bag tubing to be connected to the feeding tube or button adapter. Make sure that the end of the tube is placed firmly.

k) Feeding tube to be unclamped and the pup to be turned ‘ON’ for feeding

l) After the feeding is complete, the pump to be turned off and the roller clamp to be closed on the feeding bag tubing and disconnected from the pump.

m) Fill the syringe with the recommended amount of water.

n) The feeding tube to be unclamped and feeding tube to be flushed.

o) After removal of feeding tube, bag, syringe etc, they need to be rinsed, dried and secured.
