explain the concept of competency based education. what are the advantage of this method of learning for student who have to learn a large number of skill?
Competency based education is a new method of learning. It has a student-centered quality of education. Students advance through the content only after mastering the concepts and subject matter.
It provide a more flexible approach and an outcome base system. The learning process is tailored based on each students strenght, needs and interest. The students are encourage to spend more time on the subjects they find it difficult and provided with additional learning materials. On the other hand it allows students to ‘fast track’ course material where they have existing skills and high levels of knowledge.
This type of educational approach is self-paced, so students have a great degree of control over there own learning but there progress are regularly and timely monitored in an online method. They can make their own schedule which gives them the opportunity to work or take care of their family. That freedom and relief not having a slammed schedule will realy help the student set up their highest priorities.
Many institution created computer based programs to increase learning opportunities at the same time lower the cost of education. Since most of the program is offered online the operating cost of the institution is excised hence the lower tution fee. The faster the student advance on a subject the less expensive it is for her because she does not need to spend more time on the program.
The student will have a real-world experience for example a computer based education midwifery program, students are learning online then prove their mastery by spending several days in the a midwifery clinics.
This kind of educational strategy needs a self-disciplined and self motivated students that can plan and work independently. In my opinion this way of learning might not be for everyone. It may be soothed for a more mature type of individual that is determined to finished his or degree despite all the distractions she may face.
