Milestone #2 – Systems Planning: Systems Request
Purpose
In this milestone, the project has now made it through the pre-planning phase and you are ready to make a formal request for the new system. In order to formally kick-off the request, you will be working on completing the request for systems services document. This document is the first formal request for the new system. The request is short, but it provides a high-level overview of the need for the system and what it will provide to UWG.
Background
UWG is interested in a new information system to support its business and health information management needs. The new system would replace a mix of paper-based and fragmented computer systems. Dr. Jones had previously asked you to work with him as a systems analyst and help the group develop an information system that will support current operations and future growth. You will explore the possibility of a business support system for the scheduling, billing, accounting, and payroll functions of the practice as well as a system to support the clinical applications of Electronic Medical Records (EMR), Computerized Provider Order Entry (CPOE), and a Clinical Decision Support System (CDSS).
At your next meeting, Dr. Jones explains what the practice partners have in mind in more detail. They are looking for a medical practice software solution that allows each office worker to conduct their job more efficiently. He explains to you what systems they are looking for from the perspective of a patient who comes into the office.
Lisa Sung schedules a patient’s appointment and the patient comes into the office for the first time. On this appointment, an EMR is started for the patient that includes the patient’s demographic information, medical history, and insurance information. A patient may be coming in to see any one of the healthcare providers, including a physician, nurse practitioner, physical therapists, or the nutritionist. These providers would enter any orders or prescriptions into the EMR with the CPOE system. The Providers who use the EMR and CPOE system are supported by the CDSS. Patients often schedule a follow-up appointment before leaving the practice office. After a patient’s visit, Susan Gifford, who maintains the patient medical records, reviews the records to ensure they are complete. Carla Herrera orders any supplies needed to replace items used by the patient.
Tammy Alipio begins billing the patient’s insurance provider for services that were rendered to the patient. Tom Capaletti follows up on the billing to ensure the practice is getting paid for all claims. Dr. Jones also tells you that the system should also include modules to support Fred Brown and Corinne Summers in HR and payroll.
You explain to Dr. Jones that you would like to conduct a preliminary investigation that will give you the information you need to make recommendations about what system they should pursue. Dr. Jones agrees to your investigation and you set a follow-up appointment in one month.
Tasks
1. Health information management is a rapidly-growing sector that impacts healthcare delivery. Every specialized area has its own vocabulary, and health information management is no exception. Conduct an Internet search to learn about Electronic Medical Records (EMR), Computerized Provider Order Entry (CPOE), and a Clinical Decision Support System (CDSS). Describe your findings, in a table, using nontechnical language that is easy to understand introducing each of the health information systems. In another table discuss the business advantages for implementing each system from the perspective of a provider, patient and administration.
2. Complete a Request for Information System Services by filling out the MS2-Request_for_Information_System_Services template.

1, Electronic medical record also called as electronic health
record(EHR) or computerized patient record..EMR improves quality
and enhance safety in health system..EMR is a traditionally
paper-based record..It can share the information between different
locations easily..it increases efficiency and reduced
errors..
Computerized provider order entry(CPOE) is a process of providers
entering and sending treatment instruction..it includes order
medication,lab test,radiology,test everything through computer
application not with paper, fax or phone..CPOE can be useful in
outpatient and inpatient settings..most of the outpatient
practicing this system now..It improve the risk and useful for
basic health care process..
Clinical decision support system(CDSS) helps prevent errors at the
medication orders and improve the safety of other type of
orders..it provide more accurate value of drug dosage, route, and
interval of medication which orders..
Provider impact:
Electronic medical record physician access to patient
information,such as diagnosis,allergies,lab tresults and
medication..it will be useful for physician to review patient old
reports in multiple care settings..
CPOE physician can provide his order to patient in a safety
basis..physician can order lab test,drugs,dietary supplements..it
will avoid medication error and adverse drug events..
CDSS: is a traditional care, clinician overlook the needs of the
patient.
Patient impact:
EMR:
Patient receiving more accurate treatment and it avoid any medical
error and ensure the safety of the patient..it provide quality
treatment for patient..
CPOE ensure patient safety and patient care outcomes..it avoids
patient length of stay and readmission in the hospital..it will be
useful for the patient to contact the physician anytime and
anywhere in case of emergency and followup..
CDSS patient getting drug order and review the reports through
computer..it provide positive impact with the health care
provider..
Administration impact:
EMR improves documentation quality,increased administration
efficiency and better quality, safety and coordination of care..It
provides system development,implementation and organisational
aspects..
CPOD system helpful for administration to ensure doctor-patient
interaction..administration getting benefit from this through easy
access for patient getting more benefit..
CDSS administration interaction with this system to making patient
safety in all aspects..so patients are approcahing this system with
more hope..
