What are the products of the reaction of pentanoic acid with the strong base potassium hydroxide? _____________

Solutions

Expert Solution

Answer 1) Common and IUPAC names of amine are given in image file. In IUPAC nomenclature name of compound ends with -amine. Substituent of N are with N prefix and repeated for more than one substituted.

Answer 2) IUPAC name of carboxylic acid is given in image file. Name of carboxylic acid ends with -oic acid.

Answer 3)

i) Carboxylic acid on reaction with an alcohol in presence of strong acid undergo esterification reaction. This is reversible reaction.

ii) OH of carboxyl group gets protonated preferentially in acidic medium. Then alcohol attacks carbonyl C of acid. The reversal of –ve charge on carbonyl O knock outs H2O –a neutral molecule.

iii) Then loss of proton generates an ester.

iv) Reaction is reversible as ester generated is more reactive towards nucleophilic attack. A solution still contains H2O which serves as nucleophile and reverses reaction to starting compound acid.

Answer 4) Carboxylic acids on treatment of strong base KOH evolves H2 gas and forms corresponding salt I.e. Potassium salt of acid.

In pentanioc acid case it will forms potassium sale of pentanioc acid.

In the compound (CH3)3N=CH2, how is the lewis structure formed, considering that the octet rule must be maintained, but only one of the three CH3's actually become a CH2? Also, is the reason why (CH3)3N(+) - (-C:)H2 not permissible because the Carbon atom on CH2 has too many electrons, and the cation should be on Nitrogen instead? This is in regards to Organic Chemistry (10th Ed) Problem 19P in chapter 1.
