Research auto theft statistics for UK (England)
Given data is about theft rate in different cities of UK (England,
Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland)
It is to identify the country’s car theft hot spots.
Data revealed that english regions are driving the increase. The
West Midlands has seen the amount of stolen vehicles triple within
the last five years, making it the fastest-growing region for car
crime, and therefore the North-West and North East and Yorkshire
also saw rates quite double from 2014 to 2018.
However, London remains the UK’s worst overall spot for thefts,
with around 33 claims for each 10,000 registered on the road – a 61
per cent rise on 2013/14.
Conversely, in Scotland claims for car theft have fallen 23 per
cent over an equivalent period, while in Northern Ireland they need
remained static.
Ford Fiesta drivers are at the most important risk of theft,
with 2,384 models pinched last year. As one of Britain’s
best-sellers, these superminis are a firm favourite of the many
drivers, although it’s clear that thieves have their eye on them
too.
The formal term for joyriding is ‘Taking a Conveyance without
Owner's Consent' (TWOC).
When the suspect intends to permanently deprive the owner of the
vehicle is called grand theft auto.
CAR THEFT LAWS
As per Section 1 of the Theft Act 1968, "a person is guilty of theft if he dishonestly appropriates property belonging to another with intention to permanently deprive the other of it". A conviction can be secured if both elements of this statement can be satisfied.
PENALTIES FOR JOYRIDING & AUTO THEFT.
A person who is convicted of these crimes can be imprisoned, and a maximum sentence can be up to 6 months in prison. A fine may also be imposed up to the sum of £5,000.
