1- Briefly list the evidence (from lecture) for a biological basis of sexual orientation?
2- Give an example of how gender roles can be learned.
The relationhip between biology and sexual orientation has been a subject of research for a long time. A single determinant of sexual orientation has not yet been found, and scientists are now of the opinion that there is a combination of genetic, hormonal, and social factors that determine sexual orientation.
There are quite a few biological theories that try to explain the causes of sexual orientation.
a. Early fixation hypothesis - This includes research into prenatal development and other environmental factors that are in control of the masculinization of the brain. Some studies view pre-natal hormone exposire as one of the primary factors that determine sexual orientation. The congitive processing as well the structural differences in the brain have observable differences between heterosexual and homosexual men, which supports this hypothesis. One thing that can explain this difference is the different exposure to hormones in the womb during fetal development which can alter the masculinization of the brain. The difference in the concentration of these hormones in the womb depends on a variety of factors such as maternal drug usage, the immune system of the mother, stress and other environmental factors.
b. Exotic becomes erotic - Childhood experiences are vital in determining ones sexual orientation. The choice in activites made by a child can be determined by his temperament. Due to this, many children will choose activites that are liked by those of the same gender, however, some others choose those that are less liked by those of the same gender, which will create in them a feeling of difference. This feeling will then give rise to a psychological arousal everytime they are near to the gender they feel different to. This psycholigcal arousal later converts to sexual arousal wihich will make them attracted to the gender they see different (exotic).
