According to dictionary, prevention is defined stopping something from happening or arising. Here, the context of prevention is used for stopping the disease condition or illness from arising.
Proverb-an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure-gives us message that prevention is better than cure. It is understood from the proverb that it is better to stop the event causing damage rather than repairing the damage caused by event.
There are guidelines on prevention that focuses on nutrition and physical activity. There is a strong correlation between our health/immunity and our consumption of nutrition/physical activity. In simple words, our health depends on what we eat and what lifestyle we adapt. Let us go through areas of guidelines on prevention which focus on nutrition and physical activity.
1. Guidelines on regular exercises to keep our body healthy. Here, the guidelines involve regular work-outs; maintaining diary of workouts; choosing suitable exercises like aerobics, walking, jogging, heavy gym workout, etc. These guidelines will ensure our adherence to time table and enhance our physical ability. By gaining healthy and strong physical body, we can prevent illness.
2. Guidelines on healthy eating habits. Our calorie intake and ability to digest the food and convert it to protein influence our health and well being. Our digestive system will be in good condition and result in effective functioning of kidney, liver, etc., if guidelines on healthy eating habits followed. If we eat healthy, we can avoid many diseases like diabetes, hypercholesterolemia, liver disease, cardiac issues, etc. Also our psychological ability like perception, emotions, memory are also influenced by our nutritional status. Here, effective guidelines to distinguish food as nutritional and junk will be provided helping the population reduce risk of consuming more junk food and getting ill.
3. Guidelines on healthy lifestyle. Our lifestyle influences our healthy being. If we have sedentary lifestyle and there is less scope for daily walking or light exercises, then we will be at risk of having physical illness like high cholesterol, acidity, diabetes, etc. Also we may develop psychological issues as depression or anxiety. The guidelines on having healthy lifestyle will play major role in adapting self-disciplined lifestyle which includes regular health checks, light exercises, participating in community games, involving in social service tasks, etc. This will ensure both physical and mental integrity, thus avoiding both physical and mental illness (prevention).
