Describe significance of the ecological footprint and how it can be used to assist in sustainable engineering practise.

Ecological Footprints:Ecological footprint is defined as the ways and means to highlight the issues with our current habits and practices that is threatening our depleting resources. Ecological footprint makes us aware of our role to act in a responsible manner in our use of our existing resources in a judicious and responsible manner. For example, it tells us how much resources is required to sustain a particular activity that does not leave enough carbon footprints to damage the environment and which can be easily recycled.
Example: The method or measure determines the requirement of productive areas like cropland for animals and humans , forested areas for production of wood and wood products, marine areas for fisheries, housing and infrastructure for humans.
This helps in making plans for a sustainable living. It also helps the society to change its ways, habits and practices that makes use of the existing resources in an efficient and sustainable manner. The measure of ecological footprint also makes the society more responsible for better living.
