Describe the sequence of events (contraction and fetal heart rate) during a normal contraction. Explain the term variable deceleration and late deceleration and if any nursing interventions are necessary.
The normal FHR tracing include baseline rate between 110-160 beats per minute.During uterine contractions especially during very strong contractions ,close to delivery the fetal head is squeezed .This may result in a slowing of fetal hert rate (a declaration ) during the middle of a contraction when the preassure in the uterus is highest.Thisbalowing of fetal heart rate during the missle of a contrction is called an early deceleration.
VARIABLE DECELERATION - This are irregular ,often jagged dips in the fetal heart rate that more dramatic than late decelartions. It happens when baby's umbillical cord is temprorily compressed mostly occurs in labo
LATE DECELERATIONS-It is defined as visually apparent gradual decrease in fetal heart rate typically following the contraction.
The gradual decrease is defined as from onset to nadir taking 30 seconds or more.
When late decelerations are noted the nurse should increase the oxygen delivery to the fetus by turning the the mother on her left side ,or administer oxygen. If oxytocin is being administerd it should be stopped.
