d. How will adding an epinephrine agonist effect the heart and predict the effect it will have on the heart and state your

reasoning.

Solutions

Expert Solution

a) Adding warm solutions to heart leads to Increased heart rate and contraction. As adding warm solution leads to vasodilation of the blood vessel and leading to more heat loss. increased temperature is sensed by thermoregulatory system and activate sympthetic outflow and it leads to increased heart rate.

b) Addinng epinephrine will inrease the heart rate and contraction. As heart has beta-1 adrnergic receptors to which epinephrine binds and leads to increased heart rate and contraction.

c) Cooling the heart down leads to decrease in heart rate and contraction. This occurs due to vasoconstriction caused by decrased temperature leading to decrease in heat loss. This Decreased temperature sensed by thermoregulatory system and it increases parasympathetic outflow and hence decreasing heart rate and contraction.

d) epinephrine agonist has similar effect as epinephrine i.e. leading to increased heart rate and contraction. Epinephrine agonist act directly on Beta-1 receptor on heart and leads to increased heart rate and contraction.

(12pts) An experiment was conducted to examine the effect of age on heart rate when a person is subjected to a specific amount of exercise. Ten male subjects were randomly selected from four age groups: 10-19, 20-39, 40-59, and 60-69. Each subject walked on a treadmill at a fixed grade for a period of 12 minutes, and the increase in heart rate, the difference before and after exercise, was recorded (in beats per minute). A physician wants to test if temperature has an effect on heart rate. In order to do this, she compares the heart rates in beats per minute of several random volunteers after a period of time in a room with a temperature of 50∘F and after a period of time in a room with a temperature of 75∘F. Suppose that data were collected for a random sample of 11volunteers, where each difference is calculated by subtracting the heart rate in...

Body size typically has an effect on an individual's resting heart rate, with increased body mass negatively correlated with heart rate. To determine the influence of sex and age on this relationship, you measured the body mass and heart rate of a population of adolescent and adult males and females using a standard ECG. Your results are listed in this table. Sex Age Group Resting Heart Rate (bpm) Body Mass (kg) Female adolescent 72 40.91 Female adolescent 70 52.85 Female...
