21. The Jonas Salk Story (2-3 paragraphs) Imagine this scenario: A mysterious new virus has evolved overseas and is now gripping America’s attention. The virus is sweeping through the nation and is particularly hard on the nation’s vulnerable populations. The disease is not well understood, and this plus it’s unusually contagious and virulent nature create an unprecedented amount of fear and uncertainty in all developed countries. The terrifying disease I’m talking about is, of course, Polio. Now imagine someone developing a vaccine for this terrifying disease. Next, picture this person (incredibly) testing the vaccine on himself to avoid tedious federal regulations knowing that people are dying every hour that the vaccine remains in development. Finally, and this will seem ABSURD to some of you, once perfected, this vaccine is released to the public WITHOUT A PATENT, meaning he missed out on one of the most profitable inventions of the 20th century, up there with plastic and “the personal computer.” Do some lightweight, qualitative research on this actual person, Jonas Salk. Do some obvious compare and contrast analysis looking at similarities and differences between the COVID-19 outbreak and the Polio Pandemic. Finally, weigh in on Jonas’ decision to forego millions (possibly billions) of dollars in profit for the public good. Herein lies a classic American paradox: Capitalism (Got to compete, work hard and hustle to get ahead) vs. what’s written on our money “E Pluribus Unum” (we’re all in this together. Out of many, we are one.) Thoughts?
In 1914, jonas salk is one of the leading scientists who
discovers the first polio vaccine. he is an American physician and
medical researcher introduceed safely effective polio vaccine for
the 20th-century population. in 1955vaccine was released in the US
for use. In 1995 he died with innovation. In 1947 he begun
conducted research, salk confirmed the three types of poliovirus
that able to form killed virus vaccine for polio. the vaccine for
poliovirus grown in his lab and destroyed. Preliminary testing of
the polio vaccine given most of the children.
national testing expands major clinical trials in
medical history nearly 1.8million children got the vaccine in 1955.
salk got the funding and help and available resources from the
government at that time. it supported his research and made effort.
Jonas Salk administered experimental vaccines to his own family
members and for himself. this effort supported for approval for
general use in 1955. it made a remarkable impact on a number of new
polio cases. he replaced with live virus vaccine later for easy
affordability and easy use. In 1995 he died with his groundbreaking
vaccine he becomes one in the history to stop polio.
Before the polio vaccine was available there were 15,000 cases of
paralyzed each year in the US. In the 20th century, it was the most
fearful disease. Jonas Salk refusing patent for his work, because
vaccine belongs to people. he performed an experimental trial for
his own young son with the help of a wife including live poliovirus
as a part of the research. he pursued a killed virus vaccine first
on cells in the lab for poor and young people who have polio.
Eradicating polio worldwide as a top priority vaccine saved
millions of lives. polio dedication efforts help to kill another
infectious disease also. but for coronavirus, it needs detection,
isolation, and treatment effort to develop a vaccine. coronavirus
diseases to fight with citizens' government support is important to
complete eradication.
Capitalism as an economic system in a growing population and
country government role is important for millions of corona
virus-related deaths. it can be avoided with capitalist help and
with available resources to meet the needs of people. it can
inspire innovation and help for disease eradication with available
resources and material and funds and dedication to do research.
Capitalists include the profit and welfare of workers and humanity
as a whole. To make research and provide treatment drug companies
and researchers suffering profitable to treat coronavirus
diseases.
E Pluribus Unum alarming a thought out of many we are one, the
president made a great effort to realize American ideal. we should
work for our democracy. it needs shared sacrifice to perfect E
Pluribus Unum out of money one. if we fail to follow this we can
not survive with this COVID 19 crisis.
