In your clinical journal, describe a situation in which you have observed infants or children not receiving the disease prevention or health promotion services that they needed.
How could or would you like to advocate for this issue when you began to practice as an RN? What could you do now?
A physical inactivity is a major risk factor for the older adults. Leading a sedentary lifestyle is the potential cause of major chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, hypertension, diabetes, cancer, osteoporosis, falls. Nurses take the role of modification of lifestyle behavior in older adults. Motivate them to healthy practices and benefits of physical activity. Plan nursing interventions to overcome the barriers of negative effects of physical activity. For Ex: Administering analgesics and anti-inflammatory drugs before conducting exercise program to relieve pain and fatigue.
The most of the infant's mortality can be preventable. Lack of health promotion activities in the material is the major cause. The congenital anomalies, unintentional injuries, premature births are preventable by promoting health and well-being of the mother and the child. Children are inadequately immunized against the infectious disease.
The barrier for the health promotion and disease prevention is the health disparity. It exists by gender, race or ethnicity, socioeconomic status, education, and localities. The low-income group children are at high risk than the upper class. Secondly, Healthcare costs is another issue. The problem in health insurance coverage, uninsured people, poor access to service results in the illness of older adults. Thirdly, the local, federal, and state government agencies health plans and programs lack in disease prevention and health promotion.
The RN has to take a new look at disease prevention and health promotion. It can be better practice in community-based settings than the acute care settings. The Nurses focuses on health and prevention at all levels (primary, secondary, and tertiary). Immunization is the primary prevention. Prevention of Low-birth weight is the intervention for prenatal care. Educate the people on healthy practices. Take evidence-based decision-making and gives priority to the vulnerable population.
