Therapeutic communication is a process where communication techniques are used to promote well being of a patient in a nursing care profession.
Examples are:
1. Using silence
2. Accepting
3. Giving recognition
4. Offering self
5. Giving broad openings
6. Active listening
7. Seeking clarification
8. Placing the event in Time or sequence
9. Making observations
10. Encouraging descriptions of perception and comparisons.
11. Summarizing, reflecting, focusing, confronting, voicing doubt.
12. Offering hope and humor.
Warmth is a way of showing respect to the client. Warmth Indicators include a shift of posture toward the other person, a smile, direct eye contact, and motionless hands. Warmth can be conveyed verbally or non verbally and determine how the other person likes to be addressed. Call the client by name and to introduce ourself.
Helper behaviour levels:
Level 1: No empathy is taking place ( no evidence of helper characteristic).
Second: Empathising very little and at a level that detracts from helpee functioning ( 10% of time).
Third : minimum level of feeling response necessary to be effective ( 50% of time)
Fourth and fifth: Higher levels of helper empathy (4th - 75%, 5th - consistently present).
Stages in helping process:
Phase 1: Building techniques
Phase 2: Facilitating positive action : Exploration, consolidation, planning, Termination.
