please list the order of blood draw with a straight needle and tell me what you need to do specially if using a butterfly needle
A phlebotomist has one main task to complete each day: take blood from patients without hurting them. Phlebotomists don’t run tests on the blood or diagnose disease.
You can only become efficient at taking blood samples by practicing, When a patient comes to see you, you swab their arm, identifying potential veins for access (antecubital vein, cephalic vein of the forearm, and the bifurcation of veins on the dorsal aspect of the hand), applying the tourniquet, daring the blood by inserting the needle, take the blood sample, and remove the needle. After taking the blood sample, you label it for analysis.
Butterfly needle or a winged infusion set is used to draw blood from the hand. The needle is shorter, holding and guiding the needle can be done with the help of the wings. The risk of collapsing the veins is reduced due to tubing. The vacuum can he better controlled by using a synnge than by using vacuum tubes.
Some advantages of butterfly needle are
Butterfly system enables the phlebotomist to draw blood from the patient who have a smaller antecubital vein, children and even obese people where vacuum system finds its limitation.
Butterfly system decreases the venipuncture pain as it comes with smaller gauge needle (23 G is generally used).
It provides a better control which makes it possible for phlebotomists to draw blood from the vens in the forearm, wrist and even back of the hand.
