Write the instruction of combined topic of Ligand Exchange in Cobalt Complexes,Quantitative Characterisation of Complexes And Visible Spectroscopy - The Spectrochemical Series

Solutions

Expert Solution

The ligand exchange reaction involves the replacement of one ligand by other .

For example : Co(H2O)6]2++4Cl --> [CoCl4]2 + 6H2O

This is ligand exchange of reaction here in cobal complex involves replacement of six aqua group by four chloride groups.

Instructions:Ligand Exchange in Cobalt Complexes,Quantitative Characterisation of Complexes And Visible Spectroscopy

1) Here we use HCl as the only source of chloride ion the reaction.

2) Due to replacement of aqua group by chloride ion the colour of complex also changes.

3) It changes from pink to deep blue.

4) the change in colour is due to change in absorption wavelength by the complexes ( chloro and aqua)

5) The Splitting depends upon the geometry of the complex, it is greater if the ion is octahedral than if it is tetrahedral. Here in hexa aqua complex the geometry of complex is octahedral while in tetra chloro it is tetrahedral.

6) The difference in the colors is going to be a combination of the effect of the change of ligand, and the change of the number of ligands.

7) It is possible to arrange ligands into a series that reflects their ability to split the d-orbitals, this is known as spectrochemical series.

8) so chloride ion and aqua molecules being at different position in spectrochemical series , will show different splitting energy.
