Show that 15M acid is approximately 90% acetic acid and 10% water by weight?

Show that 15M acid is approximately 90% acetic acid and 10% water by weight?

Solutions

Expert Solution

90% of acetic acid means 90 g of acetic acid (CH3COOH) present in 100 g of solution.

Molar mass of CH3COOH is = (2xatomic mass of C )+(2x atomic mass of O ) + (4x atomic mass of H)

                                         = ( 2x12)+(2x16)+(4x1)

                                         = 60 g mol-1

So number of moles of CH3COOH is

Since we have taken the percentage into consideration the total weight of the solution is 100g

Since the water has a density if 1 g/mL so the volume of the solution must be same number as that in grams

Therefore the volume of the solution is = 100 mL = 0.1 L

We know that

So it is proved
