Essay on " Pollution control in petroleum and petrochemical Industries"
As far as environmental problems are concerned, the pollution from the industries have great impact on the environment because there are more than fifty thousand industries whose effluents harm the environment.
Chemicals and petrochemicals are what mankind is surrounded by in their everyday life. The increases demand results in the increased production and hence there is increase in the pollution. pollution is simply defined as the introduction of contaminants or other unwanted waste materials into the environment that causes a drastic change. There are many modes through which these pollutants can be introduced into the environment such as through air, water, land and resulting in air pollution, water pollution, land pollution, thermal pollution etc.
Since we are mainly concerned with the petroleum and petrochemical industries, the knowlegde about the products they produce and manufacture help us know the level of pollution they can cause. Petroleum industries includes a series of processes like exploration, extraction, refining, transportation of the products, whereas the petrochemical industries produce the petroleum derived products such as fertilizers, cosmetics, paints, detergents and pharmaceutical drugs. While these industries are providing us with many valuable products, the side products can also be very toxic to the health of various living organisms and disturbs the ECOSYSTEM. The petrochemicals can be absorbed through the skin, they can accumulate in the human tissues and organs such as brain, liver and also harmul to the other living beings.
The control of pollution from these Industries has become necessary and the steps and methods to control the pollution in industries are as follows:
1. Minimize the losses from the storage tanks and product transport by using double seals.
2. Minimize the emission of harmful gases such as NOx, SOx, COx, by desulfurization of fuels to a feasible extent.
3. Using low NOx burners to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions
4.Establishing leak detection and repair programs
5.Avoiding fugitive emissions by proper process design and maintenance
6.Using long life catalysts and regenerate to extend the catalysts life cycle
7.Recycling the cooling water and treated waste water.
Thus these are the environmental issues and the methods to control them.
