Developing A Program For Prevention of STDS For this exercise, you need to play the role of an HIV/AIDS prevention specialist and help design a program for your culture to promote condom use. You need to answer the following questions: 1. What are some of the cultural barriers that might inhibit condom use? Are any of them similar to those in Mexico? 2. What are some measures that you would suggest to help people who are sexually active overcome these barriers?
1) Although North America is generally very open and progressive
society but still like every culture it also has some shortcomings,
one of them is the importance and influence of catholic church on a
large population in this region, the Catholic Church prohibits the
use of any contraceptive and abortion techniques to its followers,
according to them by doing this, people are interfering with the
nature’s way of working, but unfortunately STDs didn’t exist 2000
years back, STD is the grim reality of 21st century and to counter
that contraceptive measures needs to be taken place on a large
scale.
Secondly, there’s a widespread drug and substance abuse in the US
and Mexico, and it has been seen that major population of drug
users have STDs, it is spread through infected syringes and not
using contraceptives during sexual contact.
Thirdly, children coming from dysfunctional families should be
monitored and counseled from time to time since reports have shown
that due to the mental trauma they face during their growing years
affects them severely and to ease this pain they mostly turn
towards drug use.
2) Me as an HIV/AIDS prevention specialist would design a program
under which more and more focus would be emphasized upon teaching
sex education to children from a tender age and making them aware
about safe sex and STDs, additionally I’ll be making sure that the
availability, accessibility, and affordability of contraceptive
products is regulated by the government so that all sexually active
use them and help stop spreading of STDs.
