Describe Klebsiella pneumoniae Carbapenemase (KPC) State the reasons that you feel the data you selected provide robust support for your perspective regarding this health problem. Discuss key concepts related to morbidity/mortality, quality of care, and cost-effectiveness as they apply to KPC related to antibiotic resistance.
P.S (Please include citations if any)
Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase these are the group of highly resistant gram negative bacilli. It Ha athe potential to be an pandemic disease. These bacteria are often misinterpreted by routine microbiology susceptibility testing and incorrectly reported as sensitive to carbapenemase. The KPC producing bacteria challenges the health care system in several ways, it includes the technique for identifying the bacteria, it's potential for nosocomial infection and limited relatively unproven antimicrobial treatment option.
The infection caused by KPC producing K pneumoniae is been associated with increase cost and length of Hospital stay, along with treatment failure and even death. During its first outbreak in New York hospital, it showed a mortality rate of 72% with attributable mortality of 50%. As the bacteria is resistant to multiple drugs, none of the patient could receive an appropriate empiric antibiotics. The current treatment is dependent on polymyxins and tigecycline. Even though these medication are effective it is associated with nephrotoxicity, neurotoxicity and few other associated infections the quality of care, patient prognosis and the duration of stay at the hospital will increase along with the cost effectiveness. Even after so much of struggle and change of treatment regimen survival rate is not appreciated well.
