A food processing company intends to develop a pilot plant to produce soybean oil by using organic soybean powder as the raw material. According to a food scientist, the extraction of soybean oil can be conducted either by using n-butane or n-hexane as the extraction medium. The extraction efficiency of n-butane or n-hexane are 76.5 % and 69.5 %, respectively. As a chemical engineer, you are asked to design a system to produce 2500 kg/h soybean oil for the company by using one of the extraction medium proposed by the food scientist. According to the quality control manager, the soybean oil produced by the system can only contain a maximum of 5 wt% of the selected extraction medium as the impurities.

Calculate the flow rate and mass fraction of the process streams in the block diagram. The assumption(s) made in solving the material balance should be clearly explained.

suppose that a food processing plant and a chemical factory are located close to each other on the banks of a river. The chemical factory uses the river to discharge its emissions. The food processing plant (located somewhere downstream) suffers damages from the emissions as it requires clean water for its operations. A food processing plant makes soup in a continuous process with a steady flow of product into and out of a large kettle. The soup is maintained at a certain temperature by heating the kettle with a coil of steam pipes. The large size of the kettle means the entering product remains in the kettle for a long time. Draw a graphic and describe how the plant could use feedback, feedforward, and cascade control to maintain a constant temperature. Which...

The Davis Company grows soybeans and processes them into soybean meal for eventual sale to food companies. Davis currently owns 10,000 tons of soybean meal, carried in their inventory at a cost of $3,400,000. Soybean meal trades on the spot markets for $350 per ton; three-month futures are selling for $363 per ton. Davis expects to sell the 10,000 tons for 90 days. On August 1, 2017, Davis sells 10,000 tons of soybean meal futures to be delivered on October...

2. A food processing plant typically contain fungus spores. If the ventilation system is not adequate, this can have a serious effect of the health of employees. To determine the amount of spores present, random air samples are pumped to a certain plate, and the number of "colony-forming units (CFUs)" are determined after time allowed for incubation. A food processing plant wants to re-purpose a pump they used to pressurize the cold water system (35° F) to pressurize the hot water system (180° F). In every regard the cool and hot water systems are identical - only the temperature of the fluid is different. What is the correct impact on the net positive suction head available (NPSHa)?
