Critical thinking is an essential component of nursing. The  Critical Thinking Model for Nursing which specifies five components: specific knowledge base, experience, competencies, attitudes, and standards. The model has three levels of critical thinking: basic, complex, and commitment.

They focus clearly on options for solving problems and making decisions rather than quickly and carelessly forming quick solutions. In crisis situations such as the emergency department often act quickly when patient problems develop.

These nurses exercise discipline in decision making to avoid premature and inappropriate decisions. Learning to think critically helps them to  care for patients as their advocate, or supporter, and make better-informed choices about their care. Critical thinking is more than just problem solving. It is a continuous attempt to improve how to apply in day to day life when faced with problems in patient care.

The nurse interacts with the patient, family, and other health care providers in the process of providing appropriate, individualized nursing care.

There are 12 predominant thinking strategies used by nurses, regardless of their area of clinical practice:

  1. Setting priorities
  2. Searching for information
  3. Generating hypotheses
  4. Making predictions
  5. Forming relationships
  6. Stating a proposition (“if–then”)
  7. Asserting a practice rule
  8. Making choices (alternative actions)
  9. Judging the value
  10. Drawing conclusions
  11. Providing explanations

Critical thinking in nursing process

The nursing process is seen as a decision making approach that promotes critical thinking in nursing. This process consists of five phases namely: assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation and evaluation.

Critical thinking is applied by nurses in the process of solving problems of patients and appropriate decision-making process with creativity to enhance the effect. It is an essential process for a safe, efficient and skillful nursing intervention.
