Research has shown that several biases can have an effect on performance appraisals. Choose three of the bias effects described in your readings (e.g., similar-to-me, physical attractiveness, age, etc.), and describe how an a organization can make systemic changes (i.e., do not just suggest that individuals change their thinking) to avoid these bias effects in performance appraisals.
Researches has shown that biases have an affect of performance appraisals of an individual.However the extent of being in a biased approach differ from organisation to organisation.It depend on work culture and the perception of individuals in the organisation. There are certain biases which affects the growth of an individual .The three such biases are described as follows;
1.Nature biases- Nature of every individual differs from one another. we may perceive a person more worthy who usually express things and others not.That open behaviour is also have some advantage and biases in performance appraisal.
2.Physical attraction-In an organisation there may be certain standard of beauty which can have a direct roll over performance appraisal.You may get discriminate even if you are hardworking if you do not fit into such standards.
3 Favouritism- Being inclined to a person just because you are free to them or you have some commons does not mean that you would consider them more eligible to performance appraisal by not involving the equal and fair participation.
How biases can be avoided in performance appraisal
1. No favouritism- Appraisal based on individual performance and not on basis of favouritism.
2. Maintaining good work culture to avoid biases and bring harmony and equality in organisation.
3. Evaluation of performance appraisal in a span of time to keep check whether the right employees are promoted.
