Discuss the economic impact of the unequal treatment of women in our society. More importantly, what can we do as a society to ensure more equal treatment of women?
Women with low income were found to experience substantially more depressive symptoms at the two and three months postpartum than women with high income. Women with precarious, low-status jobs with little to no decision-making power experience higher rates of adverse events in life, unstable tenure in employment, more chronic stressors and reduced social support. A good indicator of depression is the low employment rank
Women with low incomes are more likely to develop drinking and drug addiction problems that are significantly influenced by poverty related social stressors Improved gender roles and obligations, pay equity, poverty reduction and renewed attention to social capital maintenance would further address gender disparities in mental health
In spite of having gender equality or increasing numbers, women still do most of the domestic chores. Although men have doubled their share of housework since the 1960s, a long way to go is yet to go. Ensure that both parents get interested in the housework and teach kids how to contribute in the small ways they can. Sharing household responsibilities ensures that the work burden does not only fall on one individual and instills in children the value of gender equality and essential life skills.
Walk the talk about income inequality: You have often learned
that over their lifetime, men get paid more than women. Raise your
voice against this inequality and support equal pay for equal
jobs.
Seek female mentors / leaders: Ensure women are some of the role
models or mentors. There is a great deal that you can learn from
women in authority positions. If you want to volunteer for an
organization, go for a women's organization and do your bit to make
a change to create a world that is more equal.
