ALS stands for amyotropic lateral sclerosis.
It is commonly seen in motor neuron system. There is no curative treatment for ALS but with the help of treatment we can extend the life of individual up to 3-4 years.
pathophysiology-
no one knows the proper etiological factor for ALS.
Motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord destroyed by the unknown etiological factors which results in the distrubance in the passage of messages through nerves which inturn caues abnormal muscle moments which finally ends up in twitching and spasms.
As muscle cells are not used they gradually going to destroy and die and wasting also occurs as a result of decrease in muscle cell mass.
Some reaserchers think that damage occurs because of free radicals and defective enzymes will result in death of motor neurons.
10% ALS is caused by genetic traits which is of familial type.
and 90% is by sporadic which cause was unknown till now.
