What is the pathology of ALS disease and how can exercise correct it ?
Pathology of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis:
ALS is also known as Motor Neuron Disease(MND) or Lou's Gehrig's disease. The cause of the disease is unknown. The loss of motor neurons in the anterior horns of the spinal cord results in cell death and atrophy of the muscular fibers. Then the neurological degeneration occurs in the motor neuron system. Thus the disturbed signals between the upper motor neuron and the lower motor neuron lead to progressive weakness of muscles.
Further, the primary cortex and hypoglossal nucleus of the lower medulla are also affected. Followed by glial cells are affected. This result in shrinkage and discoloration of anterior nerve roots because of demyelination.
Exercise:
The treatment is based on the physical and occupational therapy. Exercises may improve the posture, and slow the process of muscle atrophy. Stretching exercise may reduce spasticity. strengthening exercise will improve blood circulation. Research studies show that moderate aerobic exercises may help the ALS. Ankle-Foot orthoses are used for foot drop. In addition walking, cycling, weight training helps to improve the muscles strength.
