Why should postpartum women and their families be fully informed about the expected anatomic and physiologic changes that occur as part of the recovery process following birth?
DEFINITION: A postpartum period begins immediately after the birth of a child as the mother's body, including hormone levels and uterus size, returns to a non-pregnant state. CARE OF THE MOTHER AND NEWBORN AFTER BIRTH: There are a number of points to discuss with the women and her families following the birth to ensure that the women has adequate care. The postnatal teaching should include: 1. The importance of rest and sleep and the need to avoid physical labour. 2. Discussion of normal postpartum bleeding and lochia- discuss with the women about the expected blood loss for how long. 3. Discuss the danger signs for the mother and the baby and the importance of seeking medical help quickly (vaginal bleeding, fits, fast or difficult breating, fever, severe headache, chest pain or shortness of breath) 4. personal hygiene- to prevent from infection. 5. discuss aboutbinfant feeding and breast care and the importance of only taking precribedd medicines when breastfeeding. 6. to sort out problems related to depression due to hormonal changes. 7.explaining about the baby care following mother(care of umbilcal cord, and baby care) 8. discussing about the breast for lactation become altered after the birth. Information can be given to the mother about the birth to enhance the understanding of breastfeeding and about hormonal changes. 9.thermoreguation( uncontrolled shivering and feeling of cold)- should explain to mother and their families to differ from the fever. 10.to inform about the uterine and vaginal changes after birth by contracting them to their normal size. 11. to explain about the immunization after birth to protect the mother and child to reduce the risk for future. 12. pain control and comfort measures to decrease pain after birth.
