Why is understanding the health care system at the local level important to consider when planning an EBP implementation? Conduct research and solicit anecdotal evidence from your course mentor that you will take into consideration for your own change project.
When planning an EBP project one must consider the health care system where they want it to be implemented. For example, what kind of resources will be available and is the health care system ready to implement a new EBP project. Looking within the local level helps to identify needs that will benefit the patients the healthcare system supports. EBP can address problems identified to the local health care system and will use current clinician’s expertise and will take into account patients values and preferences.
The culture of the institution in which the practice will be
implemented should be considered becausethis will affect whether or
not the practice change is supported. Unsupported practice change
is unlikely to be successful. The plan must also consider the work
environment and culture of individual nursingunits across the
healthcare institution in which the practice change is being
proposed . Some units are high performing and some are low
performing and this should be looked atwhen planning a change
because strategies for implementation will differ. Whether or not
the nursingstaff values evidence-
based nursing is also important to know. I feel it’s crucial to
success to include a well-planned educational initiative to go
along with practice implementation, and to follow up practicechange
with measures that indicate how the change affected outcomes. This
allows the nursing staff tounderstand the direct impact their hard
work has made on the institution and how it has positivelyaffected
their patients.Although the hospital I work for has implemented
numerous evidence-based practice initiatives, many
nurses don’t feel they have adequate support to carry those
practices out. This is largely due to practice barrier such as
limited staff and resources and not because nurses don’t value
evidence based practice. The ICU is particularly aggressive in these
areas when conditions are ideal and I say this
becauseevidence-based practice can be difficult and time consuming.
When enough staff is present andresources are available, it is
significantly easier to practice in this manner.
