Thymus is an organ that generates and educate T cells.Both production and education of T cells happens in the thymus. it supplies T subsets that ensure adaptive immunity and self tolerance.

Intra thymic positive selection of T cells and post thymic maturation and signaling provided by peripheral antigen presenting cells (APCs) sustains a functional and regulated T cell pool. Through positive and negative selection thymus will only allow the T lymphocytes, which will not attack self antigen, to pass. The T cell which will not able to differentiate the foreign substance will be destructed through negative screening.

All of our body's cells carry specific proteins on their surfaces that help the immune system recognize them as “self.” So they can easily identify the foreign antigen.
