Process of bone growth is called ossification ( osteogenesis).
Two types of osteogenesis :-
i) Intramembranous ossification :- bone is directly form from mesenchymal ( undifferentiated ) connective tissue.Mesenchymal cells differentiated into specialised cells. Some of these cells differentiated into capillaries and osteogenic cells and then osteoblasts .Osteoblast ( bone forming cells ) appear in cluster called ossification centre.
Osteoblasts secrete osteoid ,uncalcified matrix consisting of collagen and other organic proteins ,which calcified with in few days, entrapping osteoblasts within.Entrapped osteoblasts become osteocyte.mesenchymal cells further differentiated into osteoblasts.Several cluster of osteoid unite around the capillaries to form trabicular matrix. While newly formed osteoblasts will form periosteum.
Endocondrial bone growth :- Bone developing by replacing hyaline cartilage.Cartilage serves as template then replaced by mesenchymal cells differentiated into chondroblast ( cartilage forming cells ) .Cartilage is flexible ,semi solid matrix and avascular .Mature chondroblast cells become chondrocyte. After formation of cartilage ,it will be replaced by bone .
