The process of Variation, Selection and retention play very important role to generate innovation in an organization Because Variation means putting or implementing changes, varities which cause disruption leads to innovation. This variation could be change in business process, job of employees, technology etc.
for example- Organization changes its method to discuss in meetings.Organization implemented use of Technology like simulation where each employee would be put to different roles and then they will generate more new ideas like new product, new service etc this lead to innovation in an organization.
Another example like rotate the job of an employee where employee will work with different jobs and increase his knowledge which would lead to new and innovative ideas.
Retention means Getting something back for future use. It is like storage in which we store data and retain it for future use.
The great example is Knowledge management system in which data and knowledge of past managers, CEOs, supervisors are stored so that current manager can use that for future use. This leads to innovation because they can use past data with thier current skills and ability to make past decisions more effective and innovative.
Selection means which process or alternative to select. Selection leads to innovation because Organization and its key people focus on different aspects which generate many alternatives with their own benefits and select the best innovative idea.
for example- Use of 3D printing or use of traditional manufacturing. The organization select 3D printing then generate ideas that how 3D printing can be used in innovative ways.
