In your opinion, did Monsanto violate any ethical standards in their genetic modifications? What should Monsanto done differently? Was it ethical to for Monsanto to settle the litigation with no admission of responsibility or commitment to change any internal practices?
Yes, ..Monsanto had worked, on the notion that the genes of plants could be altered to change the plants characteristics. Mansanto violate an ethical standards in their genetic modifications and said that future of agriculture will depends on genetic engineering. Corporation’s decision was to make a big bet financially on biotechnology was revolutionary. And they developed genes that “mark” cells carrying the new DNA, the new gene into the DNA of a plant cell, Monsanto modifed plant cells, petunia and tobacco, for the first time in scientific history. They did so with the introduction of Bacillus thuringiensis (B.t.) to plant cells. It was then they done the commercial application. And theseseeds, were engineered to resist insecticides and herbicides, add nutritional benefits, and improve crop yields to increase the global food supply, also cause serious health conditions and harm the environment. The use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) has been a contentious issue.
Monsanto to settle the litigation change internal practise in genetic modifications, it used patents and licenses that also evolved other strategies. One method was to require farmers who purchased their modified seeds to sign a contract that stated that the farmers will not reuse seeds from the plants or trade or sell those seeds to anyone else. The contract also granted Monsanto the right to inspect their property for up to three years afterwards, with or without the farmer’s presence, to verify that the contract has not been broken.
