STRESS AND ITS EFFECTS
Introduction
Stress is a change in the environment that requires our body to
react and adapt to the changing situation - physically, mentally
and emotionally. It is normal and expected in life, but what
happens when there is a high level of stress? What effect does it
have on the human body and mind as such? Let's take a look.
A. Attention Getter
Did you know that Seventy-five percent to 90% of all doctor's office visits is because of stress related health problems? The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has found out that we lose out $300 billion annually because of work place related stress. Forty-three percent of all adults suffer severe health effects due to stress.
These statistics show the level of reach that stress has in
wreaking havoc in or lives. But why and how?
B. Thesis
When in stress body release hormones to cope with it. But, the
hormones release such as cortisol, epinephrine and adrenaline
affect almost all areas of the body. Here comes the killer:
Prolonged stress over days, months and years - can make the body
fight itself! Autoimmune conditions will lead the immune system to
attack the body itself. This is serious.
C. Preview of Main Points
Transition: It is important to know more about
cytokines and what happens when there is chronic stress.
Body
A. Main Point 1 - Chronic stress & cytokines
a. Subpoint 1
Chronic stress increases cytokines
i. Sub-sub point 1
The count of cytokines increases in the human body when there is a
threat or a foreign object.
b. Sub point 2
They are the cells that are essentially helpers in the normal
course of bodily functions.
i. Sub-sub point 2
These are pro inflammatory and triggers inflamation in the body for
patients with underlying health conditions such as diabetes or
heart disease.
Transition: So, how does cytokine cause the body problem, being a part of the body itself?
B. Main Point 2 - Cytokines & the immune system
a. Sub point 1
Cytokine is an immune cell which actually fights against infectious
organisms and restores the body's health.
i. Sub-sub point 1
They are fighter cells that help the body cope with any change in the body's response to change.
b. Sub point 2
But, when there is stress - this is increased in the count. Thereby attacking the body itself considering it as an invader.
i. Sub-sub point 2
This leads to the cytokines attacking the body itself -
considering it as an invader, which is not good for the body.
Transition: Now that we know that an increase in
cytokines is not good, let's see how to handle stress.
C. Main Point 3 - Reduced stress level and long
term health. Now that we know what's the effect of stress how do we
eliminate it?
a. Sub point 1 - Identify the cause of stress
i. Sub-sub point 1
It is important to keep track of when and what causes you
stress. By having a journal or a diary and noting down stress
factors, there is time for introspecting and changing it.
b. Sub point 2 - Have a mechanism to deal with
it
i. Sub-sub point 2 - If it is a bad relationship
or if it is the pressure of work or school, take a break, walk away
from it. Take time to think and have a plan to address it. Having
better relationships with people and taking things at the right
pace helps deal with change.
Transition: And what if plans don't work?
Introspection doesn't help? That's when we get help. We go to
people who can help us with the situation.
Conclusion: No matter what, mental health is of
paramount importance. What may not be stressful to someone else may
be stressful to you. It does not mean you need to not care about
it. It is not just okay, but very important that we seek help at
the right time so that stress does not eat away our ability to
function.
A. Review: We have looked at how the body reacts
to stress and what are the effects of it.
B. Thesis: The cytokines are ready to take on our
body if we do not give them a leeway to control themselves.
C. Attention Getter Tie-back: Let us remember not
to be in the seventy five percent or the forty three percent who
are affected by stress. Let us not be a statistic that proves that
stress is the winner.
