Lipases are enzymes produced by plants, animals and other microbial sources that has got many potential medical applications. They are one of the main group of enzymes that are used for the production of biofuels. In biodiesel industry, these enzymes are used for the processing of glycerides and fatty acid biodiesel production, such as fatty acid alkyl esters. While lipases from microbial sources such as fungi and bacteria are being used in biodiesel industry, lipases derived from probiotic sources are considered more environmental healthy.
One such application of lipase in biodiesel industry is the use of lipases derived from Lactobacillus plantarum and Lactobacillus brevis , bacteria belonging to the genus Lactobacillus.Lipases derived from these bacteria is used for the production of biodiesel from fresh and used olive oil. These lipases are used in the biodiesel industry for optimizing various parameters such as the molar ratio of methanol to oil, reaction temperature, enzyme loading and the stirring rate that determines the yield of the biodiesel. These lipases are used in their immobilized native forms so that maximum biodiesel conversion is obtained.Out of the two sources, the lipase derived from Lactobacillus plantarum is more efficient than the one derived from Lactobacillus brevis, in the biodiesel production, under optimal reaction conditions.
