They do it by keeping the management of the firm in check and ensuring proper ESG - Environment, Social Governance measures are met. They need to ensure that the name of the firm doesn't get tarnished in the pursuit of profits. Hence, to protect the shareholders interests, they have to ensure that management follows proper standards in its operations
