your analysis of three aspects of motivation (i.e., the will to lead, express dominance, and commit to the social good of the organization) that are essential in developing leadership skills and your personal experience recognizing motivation exhibited by an employee within the workplace. In your analysis, do the following:
It is true that every person’s motivation factor and different from others because it is affected by the cultural and situational factors. As according to Dubin, (1974) “Motivation is the complex forces starting and keeping a person at work in an organization. Motivation is something that moves the person to action, and continues him in the course of action already initiated”.
I believe that as the person plays a different role in his life, his motivating desires are also changed as per the time and the requirement of the new role. For example - when we observe a child, we found that he is motivated more by rewards and appreciation in form of a new toy or praise. But when we see him again after 7-8 years, his desires and priorities has changed and he desires more things that can only motivates him. It might possible that he did not want toys now or might be possible that he desires more expensive toys. Thus we can say that motivational factors of a person depend on three things – autonomy, mastery and purpose (Daniel H. Pink (2009)). Autonomy gives freedom to make his own choices, mastery helps a person in gaining expertise and purpose helps in expecting the right motivation for encouragement.
Like a child, I can also define my motivating factors as a student and as an employee. As a student, I will be more motivated by the appreciation of teachers as well parents. I would like to have some expensive toys. I would be motivated more when I will get any gifts on doing good o getting good grades in class.
Besides it, my motivating criteria will change when I will work as an employee. At the workplace, I would be more motivating by promotions, cash rewards or hike in salary. There is no doubt that appreciation and rewards will work here too. But the monetary reward will be more valuable for me.
The motivating factors are different because the requirement and the need of different roles. As a student, we are dependent on the parents. So we did not much care about the prices and money. But as an employee, our family is dependent on us and there are lots of basic and other needs of the family which have to full fill. This is the reason that cash awards matter to us as an employee rather than as a student. This is theory is best explained by Maslow too. He has defined the different level of needs and how at the different level, the needs and priorities of a person is changed and he is satisfied by different motivating factors.
