Matsumoto & Juang (2013) discuss trait approaches to personality which have become very important in recent years. Describe the FFM and what role one's culture may play in shaping their characteristics and adaptations.
Traits are the continuing pattern if behavior and though process that are stable over time. It includes term like nice , happy , humorous etc , terms we generally use to define others.
Trait theory consider these traits and their combination as a marker of personality. It focuses on individual difference and varying combination of behavioral traits to determine personality.
FFM , big five or five factor model is one such model that rely on trait approach to personality.
FFM measures personality on five factor
Openness related to friendly and cooperative
Conscientiouness related to discipline organisation
Extraversion related to sociability
Agreeableness related to politeness
Neuroticism related to negative emotion.
Each factor has a continuum from one end to opposite.
Culture play a significant role shaping characterstics. Even all these factors mentioned above are socially and culturally constructed. It means they might have different ir varied meaning in different culture.
Cukture also play a significant role in developing adaptation in an individual.
