Expert Solution

1.Conduct a quantitative and qualitative benchmark literature review and scan of operations best practices from the health care industry.

This question is about the evidence-based practice (EBP), which is broadly defined as the use of the best clinical evidence in making patient care decisions.

Nurses are increasingly expected to adopt specific nursing actions and decisions on evidence indicating that the actions are clinically appropriate, cost-effective, and result in positive outcomes for clients.

The current emphasis on evidence-based health care requires nurses to base their clinical practice to the greatest extent possible on research-based findings rather than on tradition, authority, intuition, or personal experience.

Quantitative research:

Quantitative is a form of research concerned with investigating things which we could observe and measure in some way. Such observations and measurements can be made objectively and repeated by other researchers.

Example:

Effectiveness of cabbage leaf application in reduction of breast engorgement among lactating mothers at PSG Hospital,Coimbatore.

Here, the effectiveness of the study can be measured in terms of assessing the pain, swelling, erythema, lymph node tenderness etc before and after the therapy(cabbage leaf application)

Qualitative research:

Qualitative research is concerned with finding the answers to questions which begin with: why? How? In what way? . It is unmeasurable. Qualitative research is concerned with developing explanations of social phenomena.

Example:

Assessment of quality of life among HIV infected patients in Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital,Chennai.

Here, the study explains the researcher all the details like how the patient acquired the disease, how is his socio-economic status etc.

Another example of a Quantitative research:

Effectiveness of incentive spirometry in promotion of pulmonary function among patients with selected respiratory diseases.

This is one of the best practice that is widely followed in the health care industry

Literature review:
Ø Comparison between Balloon Blowing Exercise and Incentive Spirometry in Patients with Chest Intubation after Trauma by Ali Rafaqat et al.

The effect of incentive spirometry on chest expansion and breathing work in patients with chronic obstructive airway diseases: comparison of two methods by Ho SC et al.
Comparison of Diaphragmatic Breathing Exercise, Volume and Flow Incentive Spirometry, on Diaphragm Excursion and Pulmonary Function in Patients Undergoing Laparoscopic Surgery: A Randomized Controlled Trial by Gopala Krishna Alaparthi et al.

Another example of a Qualitative research:

A descriptive study to assess the Quality of life among children with thalassemia.

Literature review:

A descriptive study to assess the Quality of life among children with thalassemia residing in Pune city by Mausumi Digal et al.

Ø Quality of life among children with beta-thalassemia major treated in Western Saudi Arabia by Ayoub MD et al.

2. Provide and evaluate an example of an initiative that a high-reliability health care organization has implemented.

Intravenous site infilteration is a common problem that nurses come across when administering I.V. fluids or medications to a patient. For this, application of Glycerol Magnesium Sulphate is proved to be effective treatment in reducing the pain and swelling immediately. This is being practiced in Apollo Hospital, Chennai which is a reputed, high reliability Hospital.

Let us now see the literature review for this procedure .

A comparative study to assess the effectiveness of magnesium sulphate glycerine application versus cold compress in reducing intravenous infiltration and pain among patients in a selected hospital at mangalore, karnataka by Anumol et.al

Effectiveness Magnesium Sulphate Crystal Fomentation Vs Paste Application for Phlebitis among Children Receiving Peripheral Infusion who are Admitted at Selected Hospital at Mangalore by Brincy Loyolla D'souza et al.

Effectiveness of this treatment:

Before the treatment, the patient suffers pain, tenderness, swelling at the IV infilteration site.his activities of daily living gets affected. He depends on his family for basic activites like eating , this gradually puts down his self esteem and independence.

A simple application of Magnesium Sulphate reverses the situation ,gives the patient more ease and comfort and eventually improves his self reliability.
