In " The Ruined Maid " by Thomas Hardy . What, according to Hardy, makes a woman a "lady"? Is there a difference between Hardy’s definition and yours?
Answer -
In this poem, hardy tried to highligh the critical condition of women as they are being treated like an object. The word "ruined" is used to tell that if women has made physical relationship with other men then she has been ruined. Whereas if men do the same thing then it's not a big deal. The society keeps men's at superior position and decision taking power is in the hand of men.
I agree with Thomas hardy to some extent as many people consider women as material or object and they treat them badly. It is because of Orthodox mentality of people which can be seen in today also in some places. Many companies give more salary to women in comparison to men for the same work, which show clear discrimination with women's. People talk about women empowerment but it exists in some places but not everywhere because there are mnay villages and areas in different regions of many countries where are women are facing domestic violence, sexual harassment and mental trauma.
