Disruptive behavior disorder is a common factor in substance abuse. This gives rise to many another type of disorders such as ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder) typically precede the initiation of use of a variety of substances that, in turn, make a person alcohol dependence in adolescents.
In the study on Swedish adolescents who displays aggressive behavior, restlessness, lack of concentration and poor impulse control demonstrate that the childhood conduct disorder and were more likely as adults to have an alcohol-related disorder and dependency. One of the key factors that have come out in the research is the mother's inability to control the child disruptive/disinhibited behavior at the beginning itself. Childhood environment, the family environment, the relationship with parents harsh and inconsistent discipline are associated with DBD in adolescents. Parents play an important role in shaping one's personality.
A youth who is substance abuse is four times more likely to suffer from substance use disorders (SUD). The research has suggested that if the DBD is due to substance abuse that the treatment becomes difficult.
