Write information about one occurrence that happened at a counseling agency that works with the addiction population, through group and individual counseling. Answer with a paragraph for each writing prompt. Point out core competencies and learning objectives.
1. What was the one occurrence that happened?
2. Examine the occurrence and explain why it occurred.
3. Describe the human instincts that were felt and the actions that followed.
4. Define what core competencies were addressed in the occurrence and what behavior models might apply.
1) Many a times, a addict doesn't accept that he/she is addicted and it's generally their families who see the need for counseling. It is generally seen that the client is disinterested in any session/activities. Does it for the sake of doing and may not come out of the addiction. Say for example, 'X' always answers in one word, says directly to his counselor that he is not interested in quitting, that he is indeed quite happy with his addiction. He may be angry at time and say, "My life, you don't boss me around".
2) Now coming to the reason as to why this happened with 'X', there could be many reasons like:
* His own beliefs and attitude
* Lack of empathy from family and friends
* Friend circle,peer pressure.
* Maybe the client wasn't able to build a good rapport with the counselor.
* No follow ups.
3) In such cases, the counselor team will try to find out what were the hobbies of the addicts. Which can be then introduced to them in activities. Learning new things, building something together, meditating and exercising eventually leads to a calmer and disciplined mind.
4) In the case given, CBT, REBT, systematic desensitization etc could help a client a lot.
