A ball of mass m makes a head-on elastic collision with a second ball (at rest) and rebounds with a speed equal to 0.400 its original speed.
Part A What is the mass of the second ball?
Mass of the first ball = m
Mass of the second ball = M
Initial velocity of the first ball = V1
Initial velocity of the second ball = V2 = 0 m/s (At rest)
The first ball rebounds with a speed equal to 0.4 it's original speed.
Velocity of the first ball after the collision = V3 = -0.4V1 (Negative as it rebounds so travels in the opposite direction)
Velocity of the second ball after the collision = V4
The collision is elastic.
Coefficient of restitution = e = 1
By conservation of linear momentum,
A) Mass of the second ball = 2.33m
