The preservation of materials is very important. Non-adherence proper preservation guidelines leads to early deterioration of materials. Sometimes things become even more challenging when products are composites of different materials with conflicting preservation needs. Deterioration of materials in warehouse not only cost money, but untimely degradation may also lead to failure of production plan or sometimes get undetected into the finished product and lead to failure during usage. Deterioration may arise from breakdown, accidental damage, power failure, refrigerant contamination and failure of utilities. Following are common agents of deterioration in a warehouse

  • Moisture
  • Extreme temperature
  • Exposure to chemical fumes

Preservation of Paint:

  • Paint must be stored in areas with automatic fire protection system
  • They should be stored in metal or plastic containers
  • Temperature between 15 degrees to 35 degrees Celcius

Preservation of rubber and rubber products

  • Rubber must be stored in 40 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Heat sealable PP or PE opaque material should be used for packaging
  • Humidity should be below 75%
  • Protection from direct sunlight or strong artificial light with UV
  • Store with air tight container to protect from O2 and ozone generating equipment such as high voltage motors
  • Protect from pests infestation
  • Protect from metal, liquids or semi-solid materials

Preservation of fragile items

  • Invest in mesh and safety nets for back of shelving units
  • Avoid storing in places susceptible to impact
  • Pack with cushioning material like styrofoam or bubble wraps
  • Ensure handling containers have convenient handles
