Describe the exocrine and endocrine functions of the pancreas?
Which type of the cells in the pancreas secrets insulin?
The pancreas is allowed to regenerate fully after 70% pancreatectomy, what type of cells are the regenerated insulin-producing cells derived from? What study did people do to demonstrate this
The pancreas has both exocrine and endocrine functions in the body.
The exocrine part of the pancreas secretes many enzymes that help in the digestion of food. These enzymes include trypsin and chymotrypsin to digest proteins; amylase for the digestion of carbohydrates; and lipase to break down fats in the body.
The endocrine part of the pancreas secretes hormones and it has two types of cell
1. alpha cells - These are endocrine cells in the pancreatic islets of the Langerhans that secrete the hormone glucagon, that increases the glucose levels in the blood
2. beta cells - These are those cells endocrine cells in the pancreatic islets of the Langerhans that secrete the hormone insulin, that decrease the glucose level in the blood
3. Delta cell - it secretes the somatostatin that is also produced by other endocrine cells
the scientist did a lot of studies to demonstrate this like endogenous pancreatic Regeneration study.
