For each reaction below, determine whether the major reaction is SN1, SN2, E1, or E2, and then draw the product.

Solutions

Expert Solution

The reaction will be called

1) SN1 : Unimolecular nucleophilic substitution

Here the alkyl halide will form a carbocation first and then will give substitution product

The substituted product will have inverted and retention product

The reaction is shown by the tertiary alkyl halide fastest as they will form most stable carbocation

2) SN2 : bimolecular nucleophilic substitution

Here the alkyl halide will be attacked by other nucleophile from back side of alkyl halide to give substitued product with inverted geometry.

The reaction is shown by primary alkyl halides fastest as the tertiary alkyl halides will be sterically hindered to undergo backside attack.

3) E1 : Unimolecular Elimination

Here the alkyl halide will form a carbocation first and then will give eliminated product

The eliminated product will be obtained if we have strong base as reagent in the reaction

The reaction is shown by the tertiary alkyl halide fastest as they will form most stable carbocation

4) E2 : bimolecular elimination

Here the alkyl halide will be attacked by strong base from back side of alkyl halide to give eliminated product

The reaction is shown by teritary alkyl halides fastest as the tertiary alkyl halides will give more substituted alkene.
