- What are Kirkpatrick’s four levels of training evaluation? Give an example of how each could be measured?
Kirkpatrick's four levels of training evaluation are as follows:
Level 1 Reaction: The analysis of the trainee throughout the training session, which is a crucial factor for the training as a whole. The whole topic surrounds around the premise that the training programe shall be worth the time, should be in a presentable manner, should in such a manner that it is understandable by everyone and the activities shall be engaging. And during this, reaction of the trainee shall be observed according the programes. Following can be done for the same -
Level 2 Learning: Focuses on measuring what the trainees have and haven't learned throughout the series of activities and tutorial sessions. The program shall be constructed as such that develop their skills, attitudes and knowledge, as well as their confidence and commitment.The program should bind certain learning objectives which the trainees shall accomplish throughout the session. For determining this evaluation of the trainee both before and after shall be done, eg. by a video recording of the trainee both before and after.
Level 3 Behavior: To determine their behavior, evaluation of the following shall be done:
Determining the behavior can be daunting as the trainee might not seem to apply the learning into use resulting in no change in behavior. Taking a lead in a task, observing their working style/manner, conducting interviews post the training session can also make the determining process easy and clear.
Level 4 Results: This level is the final and last one which focuses on analyzing final results of the training. The final level is considered more costly and time consuming since the trainer/organisation has to overcome the biggest challenges, which includes:
And often these programes are very cost bearing for the company, for which sometimes the trainers use the Kirkpatrick's levels of training backwards.
