Self-efficacy refers to an individual's belief in his or her capacity to execute behaviors necessary to produce specific performance attainments (Bandura, 1977, 1986, 1997). Self-efficacy reflects confidence in the ability to exert control over one's own motivation, behavior, and social environment.Self-efficacy is based on an individual's belief in their own capacity to achieve, while motivation is based on the individual's desire to achieve. Those with high self-efficacy often have high motivation and vice versa, but it is not a foregone conclusion. It is your belief in your ability to solve a problem, reach a goal, complete a task, and achieve what you set out to do. For example, a student who has a high level of self-efficacy in mathematics will feel confident in her ability to do well in a tough statistics class.
