List 3 different types of cis-acting elements that influence eukaryotic gene expression and briefly describe their function.
Cis-acting elements:
1. TATA box -
* binding site for TATA binding protein and associated
factors.
* It is a core promoter - plays crucial role in basal level gene
expression.
2. GC box and CAAT box :
* Those are promoter proximal elements.
* helps in compelete level of expression
* Binding sites for transcription factors.
3. Enhancers :
* short sequence elements, some similar to promoter
sequences.
* required for maximal transcription of a gene.
* can be upstream or downstream of the transcription initiation
site
* modulate from a distance of thousands of base pairs away from the
initiation site.
* Activators bind these sequences and other protein complexes form,
postulated to bring the enhancer complex close to the promoter and
increasing transcription.
