Fill in the table below for how plant communities change as the community develops from primary succession.
1. Bare rock - from a lava flow (no plants)
2. Pioneer species - Lichens and mosses
3. Small annual plants
4. Perinnial plants and grasses
Primary succession :
Stage 1: The bare rock is exposed by glaciers or volcanic eruptions.
Stage 2: Lichens and moss – pioneer species begin to grow on the rock.
Stage 3: Lichens and moss decompose which creates the first organic soil. The grasses and small herbaceous plants start to grow.
Stage 4: Soil thickens; Small shrubs and bushes start to grow.
Stage 5: Smaller, shade-intolerant trees (Intermediate species) develop.
Stage 6: Larger trees and shade-tolerant plants (Climax community) begin to grow.
