Imagine you are an automotive engineer for Toyoto Motor Corporation. You are test driving a new cruise control system, and you are driving around the test track at 55 miles per hour. You set the cruise control to 57miles per hour. The cruise controller takes over and speeds up to 59 miles per hour, then slows to 56 miles per hour, and finally settles at 58 miles per hour. Given this result, what adjustments would you make to the car's cruise control system to improve overall performance?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Cruise controller adjusts & maintains the vehicle speed as desired. This speed adjustment is done by various speed sensors, RPM sensors, RADAR & cameras etc.

In above case, driver has set speed limit 57 MPH & he is riding the vehicle at 55 MPH. In cruise controller over take speed is 59 MPH after overtake vehicles slowdowns to 56 MPH & finally adjusts 58 MPH.

On continuous variation of car speed will lead to reduction in engine performance.

So need to inspect following adjustments in cruise controls.

  • Check the condition of cruise control cables for its damage, damaged cables lead to signal loss
  • Check the tightness & looseness of cable. Loose & tight cable may lead to variation in speed during desired adjustments
  • Check the tightness of lock nut & accelerator cables
  • Engine ignition system proper functioning
  • Check the proper synchronization of cruise control cables with accelerator & throttle lever
  • Set Car AC system properly

Also Incorporation of Adaptive cruise control system (ACCS), where engine speed is controlled based on traffic & speeds of the side by vehicles. This system designed with forward accidents & collision warnings,

Initially driver sets the maximum speed of car later he can adjust up down speeds manually based on practical conditions.

Working of cruise control also depends on following...

  • Maintain cars/vehicle tyre pressure properly
  • Maintain battery & cables condition properly. Damaged or loosely connected battery cables troubles the working of CCS.
  • Maintain engine servicing as per manufacturer guide
  • Maintain optimum load in vehicle
  • Avoid heavy or jerk braking
  • Don’t drive vehicle by putting foot on brake
  • Road condition: Select smooth roads

(C++ with main to test) Task 1 Imagine that you are an engineer on a distant planet. You were tasked with mining the resources of the planet and have done so through largely primitive means. However you have managed to set up an automated train system to gather and collect the resources from your distant operations. Your train system collects boxes full of resources. A box might contain ores or wood or even liquid fuel. These boxes are placed into...

Eight different versions of the written driving test are administrated by the Department. of Motor Vehicles. One of these eight versions is chosen at random for each applicant. If four friends apply for licenses, what is the probability that two different versions will be used twice each (i.e. two of the friends will write one version and the other two friends will write a second version)?

You are in the market for a new car. After test driving several models, you have decided to purchase the Tesla Model 3. Including all options and up-front costs, the car will cost you $70,000. You will sell your old hybrid car for $20,000, so you need to borrow $50,000 to purchase the car. As this is a long-term purchase, you will borrow the money for 5 years. You’ve identified the following four lenders: Explain how you would rank the...

You are an automotive engineer in Western Colorado designing a horizontal curve on a twisty mountain road. This curve has a radius of curvature of 100 meters. (a) Suppose you want to slope this curve such that no frictional force is required to keep a vehicle on the road if it drives at a speed of 50 kilometers per hour. Calculate the required banking angle to do this. (b) I have a friend in Western Colorado who rides her motorcycle...

Imagine you are the orbital engineer for the first NASA space shot to Ceres, the largest known asteroid. Ceres’s nearly circular orbit around the sun has a radius of R = 2.77 AU. After being launched from the earth, the probe will initially be in a circular orbit around the sun with the same radius (r_{c} = 1.0 AU) and the same orbital speed (|\vec{v}_{c}| = 6.28 AU/y) as the earth’s orbit. The probe’s rocket engines will then fire briefly...

Imagine that you are planning a user-based usability test to evaluate a new interface that allows people to track online their medical information, such as blood tests, diagnostics, annual check-ups, and patient visits. Since many governments have set the goal to move to full electronic patient records in the next few years, this is an important project. Doctors will also use this application but, for this exercise, we’re focused on patients. Where might you want to recruit potential participants? Would...
